FAQs

Let us answer any questions!

What kind of films do you show?

Both the adult and children's microcinemas will showcase avant-garde films from renowned filmmakers and our community members alike! The events will each be 2 hours in length, though the duration of the showcase ranges from 60mins-75mins, with occasional intermissions.

How much does it cost?

Our microcinema is a completely FREE event! All we ask is that you bring an open mind... and maybe a friend or two.

What is Avant-Garde film?

Good question! That's what we're trying to figure out as well. At its most basic level, avant-garde film is a genre of experimental, non-traditional and non-conventional cinema. It is often characterized by its bold, innovative, and experimental approach to filmmaking. Avant-garde films are often seen as being ahead of their time, pushing the boundaries of cinema and creating new ways of seeing the world.

What is a microcinema?

A microcinema is a small-scale, independent movie theater that typically shows independent or avant-garde films. Microcinemas often provide a unique and intimate experience due to their small size and focus on specific types of films. They often provide opportunities for undiscovered filmmakers to showcase their work and for viewers to discover new films and foster new communities.

Who is the team behind the Impossibly Microcinema?

The Impossibly Microcinema is a student-run microcinema from Vassar College. We are committed to engaging the community and exploring different ways of understanding and demystifying avant-garde film. We screen a wide range of films, from experimental to documentary to narrative, and create dialogue between different genres of art. Our screenings aim to bring together students, faculty, alumni, and community members to explore the boundaries of film. Our mission is to make avant-garde film more accessible to everyone.
